Data Source and Calculation
The number of localities achieving the mandated recycling rate(s) is pulled from the Recycling Rate Reports submitted by localities. This number is divided the total number of reports received from local solid waste planning units established in accordance with Section 10.1-1411 of the Virginia Waste Management Act to determine the percentage that achieve the mandated recycling rate. Changes to the Statute during the 2012 Session reduced the reporting frequency for planning units of a population of 100,000 or less to once every four years. Seventeen SWPUs will still report annually, and measure will be based upon this reporting for CYs 2017, 2018, 2019. *Virginia Code §10.1-1411 was amended by legislation introduced during the 2012 Session of the Virginia General Assembly and requires annual recycling rate reporting by each SWPU or locality with a population of greater than 100,000 according to the most recent U.S. Census. Each SWPU or locality with a population of 100,000 or less according to the most recent U.S. Census must submit a recycling survey report once every four years.
