Data Source and Calculation

The Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME) has estimated that there are 4,000 (This estimate was revised from 3,000 in FY2011)orphaned mineral mine sites based on historical records of mineral mining activity in the state. Orphaned sites are those areas disturbed by surface mining of minerals other than coal which were not required by law to be reclaimed or which have not been reclaimed. The total number of reclaimed mineral mine sites is tracked by DMME staff after the final inspection of the reclamation work is completed. The percentage is calculated from these data.  DMME has limited funding with which to reclaim these sites.
