201377.00The percentage of fully accredited high schools dropped, as the board of Education introduced a “graduation and completion index” as a new accountability factor for high schools, in addition to student achievement on state tests. As schools implement more rigorous standards and tests, starting with mathematics in the 2011-2012 school year, and followed by English during the 2012-2013 school year, there may be further declines in accreditation.

201578.00The Virginia Board of Education has revised its school accreditation standards to better inform the public about the progress of schools toward meeting the commonwealth’s high expectations for student learning and achievement. The revised Standards of Accreditation create new Partially Accredited ratings to differentiate schools that are close to meeting the requirements for full accreditation, or that are making significant progress, from those that are not. The standards schools must meet to earn full state accreditation have not changed. Students still must achieve adjusted pass rates of at least 75 percent on state assessments in English and adjusted pass rates of at least 70 percent on tests in mathematics, science and history/social science for a school to be Fully Accredited. And high schools still must achieve a Graduation and Completion Index (GCI) of at least 85 points.
